Transcript – “View from the Hill” video about WKU parking lots projects using permeable pavement.

Announcer: “In at least 4 parking lots on WKU’s campus this summer, rows of cars have been replaced by piles of dirt.”
Dan Chaney: “We’ve removed all the existing surface gravel and asphalt and various concrete on all of the lots and we’re doing a full depth reconstruction.”
Announcer: “This full depth reconstruction is being done with an eye toward the environment. Pervious pavement like this that’s already been poured at the parking lot on Normal and University will allow storm water to seep into the ground.”
Dan Chaney: “It literally is a pavement that allows water to go through it instead of running off of it.”
Announcer: “Once completed, 50 additional spaces will be added to the Adams Street lot adjacent to the Kentucky Museum. Vehicles will actually be able to park on top of this underground storm water storage basin.”
Jennifer Tougas: “That’s what’s going to happen underneath the parking lot is the water is going to be stored underneath it until it infiltrates into the ground.”
Announcer: “Over at the Chestnut Street North lot, storm water run off will be reduced by 41% thanks to the permeable asphalt.”
Dan Chaney: “Let the water infiltrate into the ground and let the natural filters take place. Even some mechanical filters in some cases take out some of the pollutants and thereby reducing our carbon footprint.”
Announcer: “Crews are watching the clock closely as the start of the fall semester approaches and are hoping that students will be pleasantly surprised by the changes.”
Jennifer Tougas: “I’m really looking forward to sharing with them some of the innovative designs we’re incorporating into these parking lot projects.”
Announcer: “With this week’s ‘View from the Hill’, I’m Amy Bingham.”
