CHANGES IN TAILGATING PARKING POLICY - Updated Thursday, October 01, 2009
WKU MAKES CHANGES IN TAILGATING PARKING POLICY
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky University is making some changes to its tailgating policy.
Beginning with the Hilltoppers’ Oct. 10 game with Florida International, vehicles will be limited to parking lots during tailgating. Campus lawns will remain available for tailgating, but vehicles will not be permitted on them. Fans using lawns for tailgating may set up as early as 8 a.m. on Saturday, and they may use pop-up tents (no long stakes), grills and coolers as before. Temporary parking areas will be provided for unloading all necessities.
Howard Bailey, vice president for Student Affairs, said the increase in football attendance and tailgating has resulted in more vehicles on lawns, resulting in significant damage to trees, landscaping and sidewalks.
“The last thing we want to do is to discourage game-day tailgating, a time-honored tradition at WKU,” Bailey said. “While we are confident these new policies will protect and preserve our beautiful campus, we are equally confident the tailgating experience will not be compromised.”
Fans can still tailgate from vehicles in surface parking lots, such as the Creason, Adams Street and University Boulevard lots. With the exception of lots designated for Hilltopper Athletic Foundation passes, groups who tailgate on parking lots may occupy up to three parking spaces, including the one for the vehicle. All driving lanes must remain open.
Other standard tailgating guidelines remain in effect.
